Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

Soooo, after all my softcore training, race day for the 2.5 mile trot arrived.
Webster Park, a wonderful place, bordering Lake Road, across from the shore of Lake Ontario, was the site of the happy gathering of over 3,300 runners and their cheering friends and family.

It was cold (mid 30s) and windy (at the bus shuttle spot), and Joseph opted to go to Grandma's house and wait while Larry came back to the park and saw me in the first 100 yards of the Two-Five start and then met up with me at the end.

Not knowing where I was going to be in the merged pack of 4.4 milers and 2.5 milers, he managed to get a few shots off the camera as I made my way across the finish line.  All of the blog photos are taken by Larry.  He took many shots of the whole Four-Four crowd that started their race up Holt Road and 10 minutes before our start that was about 200 yards down the way.  The two races split, then merged, split and merged again at the end.

4.4 beginning.  Go Banana-Man!
The current x-c team members carry the Turkey Trot flag.
This exact (4.4 mile) run began as a training run for R.L Thomas (my H.S.) X-C team in 1972.

The crowds on the edges at top of intersection are runners waiting to start the 2.5 mile race.  There were 2043 runners for 4.4 mi. and 1293 runners for 2.5 race.
Notice all of the kids running!

Tough start for one Native.

Finish line at "the tree".

Top male overall (4.4 mi)

Banana Man - triumphant!

The fork is smiling at the finish.

Blurry and hot (one too many layers)

Chapstick, air, please!

This is a run . . . . ?

Blurry red bandana and 29:01 clock!

Official time was 29:13

Yah, just under 12 minute miles, but I am happy to have gotten through that 2.5 miles (with 5 short walks). Conditioning obviously not where I'd like to be.  Mentally - I made it!!  Sweet relief!  You couldn't tell by the close-up . . . Are there many runners really smiling at the end of a race?  I finished 39 out of 75 runners in my female age division (if that counts for anything)!  Umm, the top female in my age division was a full 10 minutes ahead of me . . . . Set my sights!  From zero miles to a 2.5 mile race in less than a week . . . and I can still walk . . . and think about more running!  Pretty good!
At last, Larry found me, wondering with my cup of water and an apple, happy-heavy hugs, and we went up the hill to catch the bus back to the middle school, back to Joseph, and back to our other turkey day festivities. We completely forgot to take the - after the race - happy, smiling photographs!

Next race we will!

TTT - Day 5 Weightlift

Last night.

Today, was a day of rest from the road.
And, a day to mix things up and do something different with my sore quads and hamstrings.
My set of exercises included a 45 lb weight (aka Joseph on my shoulders) and involved dancing, jumping, stretching, squats, and giggling.  I highly recommend it!
Whatever will happen on the road Thanksgiving morning will be of its own making . . . involving nearly 3000 people!  So, I think I actually need more of a meditative conditioning . . .

One Minute Workout

Workout (link)

To join in this workout you will need:
1.  Theme song from Wallace and Gromit
2.  Floor space
3.  The energy of a five and a half year old boy

ENJOY!

(This was a gem from the summer)

TTT - Day 4 (2 mile run)

On the road again.

Details:
Sunny, 54 dgrees F.  Dressed too warm, I was stripping off jacket as I ran.
Different route today = no dog chasing after me!
iPod nano playing OBCR - American Idiot.  Maybe, you have to see it on Broadway to know the energy this brings me.  In my mind, I see them on stage - and if they can move it and sing - so can I!  (minus singing).

2 mile run.  27 minutes (w/ walking).  Feeling good actually.

One mile point is at Hope Lane (YES!  Truely.)

A bit more walking.  My shadow's the only one that runs beside me.

I still do not know how to embed the actual youtube clip into blog and have the video picture open up in blog page.
And, still trying to figure out how to get videos off android phone and iPod into my video files.
Times like this, I do wish I had a Mac computer.

TT Training on bike (w/ KinderVid)

Bicycling with Joseph in tow.  The Trek trailer holds up to 100 lbs - yahoo!
Burns the thighs . . . which has now helped them feel better actually.
Joseph's first time with video mode of htc android phone.  He kept wanting to point and shoot, which means he would start then stop the video.  So we had many short (4 second) videos.
He has seen me with the camera too much I think!
Here is a little bit - (click on headings of pics below)

TT Training on Trail

Joseph, Abbey and I had a good two hour hike up and back to Pole Steeple overlook.  Trying to give my leg muscles and heart a workout without the road running.  Felt great to be in the woods!

Joseph ran most of the way up while pretending he was Luke Skywalker fighting Emperor Palpatine.

Hiking in Michaux State Forest

We were laughing because Abbey was sniffing the camera as the self-timer was about to go off.

Another video below.  Lots of people at the top (including a geology class).  The view was nice (though overcast), yet Jose was more interested in what the name graffiti said on the rocks (ah well . . .)

Turkey Trot (TT) Training - Day 1

It's all about the details, no?

Solo.  46 dgrees F.  2.5 miles. 32 minutes (about 6 min. was walking).
So, somewhere between 10 and 13 min. miles.
Calf cramps.  Tight breathing until 15 minutes in, then relaxing.
Large barking dog commanding his territory . . . into the road, twice.
Kept running, calm, no eye contact (happy thoughts).
New route needed for next time.
One happy, loving dog to greet me at home.  One happy self.

                                 My favorite (only) Sahalie Buff.
                                 My favorite Asica sneakers.

                                                              Starting and ending point.

Happy, sweet Abbey
(probably wondering why she didn't go with me . . . a little fast old girl.)

A good beginning trot!
